My husband brought me flowers last night. It is really amazing how wonderful a sweet surprise like that can make me feel. It's a sunny, breezy afternoon in Hilo town and I'm spending it making jewelry and drinking tea. I will most likely force myself to step outside for a moment and at least look at the ocean. I might even dip my toes in if I'm feeling brave.

The New Year
The past has passed and the future is here. New ideas, new projects, new toys and most significantly: a new home.
Today, I enjoy the winter sunshine and the ocean breeze all from the comfort of my little studio by the bay. I am so deliriously thankful to be here. Thom and I finally have a place of our own.
I raise my glass to sanity, to flushing toilets, to electricity, to everything we went without and now enjoy on a daily basis. I welcome myself back to civilization. The bright lights of Hilo town.
We were in the jungle for a long, long time.
Maybe you'll see us around.
Happy happy new year everyone! <3

An Ocean of Milk...
ॐ श्रीं महालक्ष्म्यै स्वाहा
My mother used to tell me that I was a baby cow. I love milk. I have always loved milk.
I remember the horror I experienced, upon finding out one afternoon in my adolescence, that we had run out of milk. As soon as this terrible news was delivered, I began to feel the constriction in my throat and my insides drying out. I collapsed on my bed and croaked out "I'm so thirsty". "You can drink water" replied my mother. At the time, I couldn't believe that she could be so heartless. How could she seem so calm and callous in such a crisis? Maybe she didn't realize the seriousness of my situation. Maybe she didn't know that I could die of thirst at any moment and no amount of water would save me.
I share this story to illustrate the obvious attraction I would have to a goddess who was churned out of an ocean of milk. Can you even imagine such a glorious thing?
An ocean of milk...
She emerged seated on a thousand-petalled lotus. And I am sure that delicious milk was dripping from every petal. Enough to dunk an infinite amount of pink cupcakes and chocolate chip cookies into. Enough to quench everyone's thirst.
Thank you for your blessings beautiful Lakshmi.

A place of our own...
I asked my nephew to draw a house for me once. This is what he drew. Looking at it fills me with hope that one day we really will own a home. I hope it's as cool as this one.
I hope it sits under a crazy rainbow and has at least one giant guard flower in the yard.
One day it will happen.
In the meantime, I have my picture.

Blue Skies...
After a long break from etsy, I have decided to go back. I have set up shop on a few alternative on-line marketplaces and although easy and friendly, these other venues haven't seemed to really bring in sales.
THIS time, I will not re-list items over and over in an attempt to get views. I will simply list an item once and if it expires before it sells, I will re-list it then.
At some point, I got it into my head (I'm sure I read it somewhere on etsy) that if I kept listing my items, the customers would flock to my shop and the big bucks would start rolling in. I learned the hard (and expensive) way that it doesn't work like that.
Whatever, it's all some big stupid mystery anyway. I will get back up, dust myself off and try again.
Aaliyah would be proud.

Strawberry Pie
Marked with a "T"
On Wednesday, I baked my husband a strawberry pie and it was good.
It was his birthday and he made a very specific request for strawberry pie. It felt good to bake. I still have left over good feelings from the whole experience. Maybe it's actually the leftover pie that I feel good about.
The recipe I used was for a double crusted pie. I chose this because the crust is always my favorite part. It has to be good crust though. It was good. My mother makes the yummiest pie crust in the world. At this point, I should confess that I had to recruit her for the project. Actually, to be honest, I think she did most of the work. How kind that she was willing to let me take all of the credit.
Happy Birthday.

How Succulent
I will now reach back into the rusty recesses of my memory and resurrect a once instinctive, yet long neglected adolescent art-form. I will attempt to quickly summarize the last 6 months of my life in one long run-on sentence:
It all started when Thom and I introduced our friends and family to our band Delight Talkies at an event we named the 'Paradise Park Party Delight' that also featured belly dancers and vampire movies and then we learned a love hula and I made 7 matching earring and necklace sets for my friend Leah and then we went to Pennsylvania for the wedding of Derek and Leah and we drank whiskey and Valery and I swam in a hot tub with an amazing view and the cat opera was conceived and then we came back to Hawaii and moved around and fed dogs and cats and birds and then we lived in a tent and then flew to Japan and survived an earthquake and I lost my voice and got poisoned by a bad musubi and we introduced Japan to Delight Talkies in Roppongi at Club Trick or Treat and met some nice Russians then we came back to Hawaii and lived with a dog for awhile in Honomu and then went back to our tent and got really muddy so we moved to a house and made some new friends and drank some beer and I started selling my jewelry at the Volcano Winery and my friend Beth and I sewed our own skirts and I read the 'The Grapes of Wrath' for the first time and we went to the Kona Brewfest and stayed in room 19 at the Manago Hotel and now we are back home again.
I have also started a collection of succulents.

What if we lived in the sea?
I have been away from my blog for awhile. I have been simmering in a bitter stew of self pity and anger. Etsy, the big fat butt faces, have suspended my shop because of my extremely late bill. I have been threatened with collection agencies and permanent shop closure. Etsy has been very vague and cold in their correspondence with me. They will not accept payments. I am not sure what I am going to do.
I could go on and on complaining and explaining in detail how I go myself into this mess but that sounds rather boring. The point is, I'm no longer an active member of the Etsy cult. The delusion is over. It's time that I start focusing energy elsewhere. I hope to have a new virtual shop open soon. This whole Etsy mess has really taken a toll on my enthusiasm. I was already feeling discouraged and having my shop suspended really did me in. I'm slowly getting my inspiration back. We shall see.
Most of my time has been focused on music and theater lately. I am portraying the town floozy in KDEN's production of "Cinderella" and I have been playing my mandolin like a mad woman. My calluses are becoming a part of me.

Busy Busy Bees
I am swirling around in the undulating vortex of time...as usual.
It has been a week and 3 days since I had the pleasure of attending the Big Island Film Festival at Mauna Lani. My husband and I went to represent The Ballad of Sandeep, one of the submissions in the festival. If you have not yet had the privilege of viewing this epic short film directed by Derek Frey and starring Deep Roy and The Minor Prophets, you can find it at lazerfilm.com.
Thom and I were lucky enough to be included in the crew on this film. Armed with a powder puff and steamer, I kept everyone un-shiny and un-wrinkly during the shoot. I should also mention that I had a cameo as the effervescent waitress in the Indian restaurant scene and if you look closely, you will see me reviewing reports in one of the office scenes. Thom was on boom mic duty and provided security in some of the more dangerous locations. He definitely had it much harder than I did. Holding a boom mic for hours under hot lights doesn't really look all that fun. Most of my time was spent eating donuts and watching everyone else work.
After touring through festivals all across the universe, Sandeep finally landed on the big island for a screening on May 27th, 2012. Chauffeur Liam piled us into his jeep and drove across the dangerous island terrain before delivering us safely to our destination. The Mauna Lani resort is a plastic oasis in the middle of what looks like Mars. It was HOT. I was grouchy. We started drinking to take the edge off. Things were fine after that.
We passed out flyers, ate pupus and finally watched the screening before being drug up to the front of the room for a torturous Q & A. Thom was pretty much on his own with that one. To my credit, I did help him with a good bit of smiling and nodding.
So, here's to The Ballad of Sandeep! Congratulations to Derek, Deep, The Minor Prophets and all that helped make this film a success!
P.S. Thank you to Hadley Catalano of Big Island Weekly for her lovely article and the folks at the Big Island Film Festival for letting us partake in the filmy festivities.

We will never be the same...
I have been to Tokyo and Back.
Do words exist that accurately describe Tokyo? If they do, they are probably Japanese words with no translation into English. I have tried explaining to people what it's like. They look at me with confusion and the polite nod that means "I'm acknowledging that you're talking but I don't really understand what you are trying to say". My description of this place comes out flat, not nearly as rich and dimensional as the actual experience.
We stayed at the Grand Hyatt in Roppongi on the 10th floor. We had smoked salmon, salad, cereal, fresh fruit and cappuccino for breakfast. Thom and I tried to get some sight seeing in but most days were spent either sleeping, eating or preparing for the evening's festivities. Preparation consisted of Thom drinking beer and watching Japanese television while Aiko and I messed with our hair and makeup for hours.
The first night was the premiere of Dark Shadows directed by Tim Burton. Thom and I were lucky enough to walk the red carpet and annoy dozens of photographers. It was windy and cold but worth it. We watched Johnny and Tim do interviews, shake hands and sign autographs for fans dressed up like Barnabas and Angélique.
From that point, it turns into a blur: sake, whiskey, multiple trips to toy shops, glitter, lots of black lacy polyester clothing, tears, more whiskey, potatoes, babies, vampires, corsets, bunny ears, samurai, chanting, ramen, eye balls, Japanese language lessons, crispy pizza, kittens, monkeys, giant crabs, maids, glow sticks, facials, falls, Frank Zappa and Green Gargantua at Tokyo Tower.
It was quite an experience. Thank you to all my friends.

Passports, maps & red suitcases
Thom and I just returned from our trip to the Honolulu Passport Agency.
The adventure started out with breakfast at the famous Like Like Drive In. We ate eggs, potatoes and pancakes. We drank orange juice and coffee. I really like the sign they had out front. The sign was the best part.
We checked into our filthy room at the Pagoda Hotel, dropped off the red suitcase and ran out the door to meet up with my superhero friend Wilma and her boyfriend Steel for a nice drive along the coast.
That was day one.
Day two, we stopped at ʻIolani Palace to pay our respects, only to find that the Hawaiian Kingdom was overthrown by a bunch of greedy businessmen back in 1893.
Consequently, no one was home.
After concluding our passport business with the feds, we took a stroll. We met a young boy along the way who filled us in on current events and told us where to purchase a map of Tokyo.

This is the most recent map I could find. It was printed in 1988, but I don't think much has changed in the last 24 years.
We should have our passports by early next week.
Tokyo, here we come.

It could happen
These are my calluses.
I have also spent a fair bit of the day thinking about Freddie Mercury and his amazing voice. He had a great mouth. I think the shape of his mouth helped him sing. Oh to sing like that!
I always try to imagine that I have a flip-top head when I sing. I think it helps me open up. Get my head out of the way.
This was my birthday dinner.
I may be going to Japan in May.
I want to record an EP at Air Studios in London.
That is all I really have to share for now. Have a lovely day!

Beautiful people
Last weekend I had my first ever Finch and Flower photo shoot with the help of photographer Daniel Nathaniel and model Cristina Hussey!
We were blessed with a bright sunny day so we drove a little up the road from where I live in Volcano and found a nice spot in the forest.
Cristina was very patient as Daniel and I scurried around her. I can't believe how quickly we got through everything. We were like an assembly line. I was on jewelry duty, I handed Cristina things and helped with clasps and such, Daniel would snap away and then we'd move on to the next item. We got through 20 something pieces in about 2 hours. I think that's pretty impressive.
I also did the catering. We had wine, sparkling apple juice and those yummy vanilla cream rolls you get at KTA. Unfortunately, I think I consumed most of the goodies, hopefully Cristina and Daniel got a little something.
I will update the shop as soon as Daniel sends me the finished photos, in the meantime, here is a sneak peek! I think you will all agree that the results speak for themselves.
This has been something I've dreamed of for a long time. I have done the best I could taking pictures of myself with my little camera, but it really does not compare to having a real photographer and an actual model to work with. I am so fortunate to know two such beautiful and talented people. Thank you Daniel and Cristina!

Birthday fun
This week has been a week of very important birthdays. My husband Thom, my nephew Aerius who turned six and my dear friend Tiana.
We took a trip to Kona with Thom's family to celebrate his big day. I gave Thom a copy of "The Curse of Lono" that morning and he brought it with him to read excerpts from along the way. Our first stop was
Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau, also know as The City of Refuge. Thom really likes the Tiki guys.
Next, we traveled to Aliʻi Drive in Kailua-Kona to check into the Kona Seaside Hotel. I forgot how cool this Hotel was. It's exactly the way I remember it from when I was a kid in the eighties and I am sure it was exactly the same back in the sixties when it was most likely built. Blue shag carpets, an old zenith tv and chains hanging down the walls from the fan and the ceiling light. Our old red suitcase felt right at home.
From that point, we began filling ourselves with various alcoholic liquids and walked around looking at the sights. I have a new appreciation for Tiki bars, little umbrellas and really long straws. Kona is a lot cooler than I remember. I guess you just have to know where to look. This trip will live on in our hearts and minds for all eternity.

Tea Time all the time
Speaking of jewelry, I expect to make a supply order very soon so that I can manifest in the physical world some of the jewelry floating in my head. I have lots of ideas that involve jobe's tears and copper. That is all that I will reveal at this time.
I have also spoken to Ira Ono of Volcano Garden Arts about carrying some of my pieces in his gallery. He gave me his card and told me to set up a time to bring my work in so that he could look at it. I am excited and a little scared at the same time. I will let you know how that goes. At this point, I don't know if I really have enough of an inventory built up to be spreading it around. I better get to work.

A lovely day in Volcano
The shining sun and the misting rain are taking turns today. I haven't decided what to do with myself yet. I could go to Punalu'u with the lovely Cristina and the ever gallant Romeo or I could stay home and clean. Hmmmm....tough choice.
Either way, I'm sure an adventure awaits me.
Either way, I'm sure an adventure awaits me.
